Subclass 820/801
Allows the applicant to live, work, and study in Australia while waiting for the permanent visa. It's for people who are already in a relationship with an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen.
Temporary Visa (820):
Initially granted to the applicant while their permanent visa (801) is processed.
Permanent Visa (801):
Can be applied for after holding the Subclass 820 visa for at least 2 years.
Who it's for:
Couples (married or de facto) who are already in Australia.
Subclass 309/100
It’s for partners of Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens living outside Australia at the time of application.
Temporary Visa (309):
Initially granted while the permanent visa (100) is processed. The applicant can enter Australia on this visa.
Permanent Visa (100):
Can be granted after a certain period of time, typically after about 2 years, as long as the relationship remains genuine.
Who it's for:
Couples (married or de facto) who are outside Australia when applying.
Subclass 300
(Prospective Marriage Visa)
This visa allows you to enter Australia to marry your fiancé. It is a temporary visa valid for 9 months. After marriage, you can apply for a Partner Visa (820/801 or 309/100) to stay permanently in Australia.

Couples who are engaged to be married and want to marry in Australia.
