The skilled visa points test is the most misunderstood mechanism in Australian migration, and the confusion comes down to one number. Under the skilled visa points test you need 65 points to lodge an expression of interest for a subclass 189, 190 or 491 visa. Because that figure is published everywhere, people treat it as the target. However, 65 gets you into the pool, not out of it. In the June 2026 round, some professional occupations were invited only at 95 to 100 points. This guide walks through every factor in the current skilled visa points test table, shows you how to score yourself honestly, and explains what your number actually needs to be.
Key takeaways from the skilled visa points test
- The skilled visa points test applies identically to 189, 190 and 491. Pass mark 65, theoretical maximum 130.
- 65 points makes your expression of interest valid. It rarely makes it competitive.
- In the 4 June 2026 round, cut-offs ran from 65 for construction trades to 100 for the most saturated professional occupations.
- Age and English carry 50 of the available points between them.
- Overseas and Australian work experience are capped at 20 points combined.
- Points are locked at the date of invitation, not lodgement. Changes in between can invalidate a claim.
- Every point must be provable. An unprovable claim is worse than a lower score.
Scoring yourself is the easy part. Working out whether that score is competitive for your occupation is where most people get it wrong.

How the skilled visa points test works
First, a structural point: General Skilled Migration does not process applications in the order they arrive. You submit an expression of interest through SkillSelect, nominate an occupation you hold a positive skills assessment for, and declare your skilled visa points test score. The Department of Home Affairs then runs periodic invitation rounds, inviting from the top of the ranking down until the round’s allocation is used up.
So the skilled visa points test is a ranking device rather than a pass-or-fail exam. Notably, subclass 189, 190 and 491 all use the same table. Consequently, Millennium Migration always models all three together rather than one at a time.
Meanwhile, two timing rules trip people up. Your score is assessed at the date of invitation, not the date you lodge. Consequently, a birthday, an expiring English test or a change in relationship status in between can quietly break a claim. Furthermore, when two candidates tie, SkillSelect ranks by date of effect, so whoever reached that score first goes ahead. In the June 2026 round the tie-break date was April 2026, which means candidates on the minimum invited score were only reached if their expression of interest predated that month.
The full skilled visa points test table for 2026
Here is the complete skilled visa points test table currently in force, set out in Schedule 6D of the Migration Regulations 1994. A redesign has been under government consultation since the 2023 Migration Strategy, but as at August 2026 this is still the operating table.

How the skilled visa points test caps work experience
Important: the test scores overseas and Australian work experience separately, but caps the combined total at 20 points. So eight years overseas plus five in Australia scores 20, not 30. This single rule produces more self-assessment errors than any other line in the table.
Where the 130 points actually sit
Finally, the theoretical maximum is worth seeing as a shape rather than a list. Age and English alone account for 50 of the 130.
Maximum points available by factor. Bars are to scale against the 30-point maximum.
Age

Work experience (combined cap)

Total 130. A 190 nomination adds 5 on top; a 491 nomination or family sponsorship adds 15.
Age: the factor you can only lose
Age carries the heaviest single weighting in the skilled visa points test at 30 points, peaking in the 25 to 32 bracket. Turning 33 costs five points instantly. Similarly, turning 40 costs another ten. Once you turn 45 you cannot be invited at all, because age is assessed at invitation rather than at lodgement.
This is the only factor that moves in one direction. Consequently, timing matters more here than almost anywhere else in skilled migration. If you are 32 and eleven months, everything else in your file should have been finished yesterday. Millennium Migration has seen people lose an entire pathway to a birthday three weeks before a round.
English: the fastest 20 points available
English is where the skilled visa points test rewards effort most directly. Competent English โ IELTS 6 in each band or equivalent โ is the entry requirement and scores zero. Proficient (IELTS 7 in each band) is worth 10. Superior (IELTS 8 in each band) is worth 20.
Because it is the one high-value factor entirely within your control, retaking the test is typically the first recommendation Millennium Migration makes. Twenty points can often be earned in a few months of focused preparation rather than years of accumulating experience.
English test changes from 7 August 2025
One technical trap deserves attention. From 7 August 2025, the Migration (Specification of Language Tests, Test Scores and Passports) Instrument 2025 (LIN 25/016) reset the specified scores and expanded the accepted test list. CELPIP General, LANGUAGECERT Academic and the Michigan English Test joined the existing providers.
PTE Academic changed most. Each component now carries its own minimum rather than one uniform number across all four, so writing and speaking demand more than they used to while listening and reading demand slightly less. By contrast, IELTS was not affected โ 6, 7 and 8 in each band still mark competent, proficient and superior. Consequently, if you sat PTE, checking your result against a pre-August 2025 table may mean reading the wrong benchmark entirely.
There is also a transitional concession worth knowing. A test taken on or before 6 August 2025 can generally still be relied on until 6 August 2028, under the score requirements that applied when you sat it. However, the result must still fall inside the normal three-year validity window at the time you lodge. So an older result is not automatically worthless, though it is not indefinitely useful either.
Work experience and the 20-point cap
For work experience, the skilled visa points test counts employment in your nominated or a closely related occupation, at a skilled level, within the last ten years. Furthermore, it must be paid work of at least 20 hours a week. Australian experience is weighted more generously than overseas โ 20 points at the top against 15 โ but the combined cap means the two do not simply stack.
The word doing the work there is “skilled”. Assessing authorities often nominate a deemed skilled date, which can fall later than the day you started the job, and only employment after that date counts. Moreover, some states apply a stricter view again for nomination, so the same work history can produce different answers on different pathways.
In practice, this is where self-assessment and professional assessment most often diverge. Payslips, tax records, contracts and reference letters all need to line up with what you claimed, because the Department will ask for them. In practice, checking that alignment early is a large part of what Millennium Migration does on a skilled file.
Qualifications and study-based points
Qualification points run from 10 for an Australian diploma or trade qualification, to 15 for a recognised bachelor degree or higher, and finally to 20 for a doctorate. Crucially, the skilled visa points test only counts a qualification recognised by the relevant assessing authority for your occupation โ which is not the same as holding the degree.
Extra points for Australian graduates
Australian graduates can stack smaller awards on top. First, two academic years of Australian study meeting the 92-week rule is 5 points. Then, if that study was completed at a regional campus while living regionally, another 5. A masters by research or a doctorate in a STEM or ICT field from an Australian institution adds 10, and that sits on top of the qualification points rather than replacing them. A Professional Year in accounting, engineering or IT adds 5.
These add up quickly. For example, an Australian graduate who studied regionally, completed a Professional Year and holds a NAATI credential collects 20 points from those four items alone. Therefore domestic graduates are often more competitive than their raw experience suggests.
Partner points and nomination points
In the skilled visa points test, partner points reward three situations equally at 10 points: being single, having a partner who is already an Australian citizen or permanent resident, or having a partner under 45 with a positive skills assessment plus competent English. A partner with competent English but no skills assessment brings 5. A partner with neither brings nothing.
There is a dangerous edge case here. Because points are assessed at the date of invitation, someone who was single when invited and then married before lodging cannot swap in partner skill points afterwards. Indeed, the Department has in some cases refused applications on the basis that the partner was not part of the applicant’s circumstances when the invitation issued. If your relationship status may change in that window, speak to Millennium Migration before it does rather than after.
Separately, nomination points sit outside the personal factors: 5 for a 190 state nomination, 15 for a 491 regional nomination or eligible family sponsorship. That 15-point boost is why the 491 has been the pathway of choice for applicants in the mid-70s. However, with 2026-27 regional allocations cut from 33,000 to 14,110 places, competition for those nominations has tightened sharply.
Got a points claim you’re unsure about?
Send us the detail and we’ll tell you whether it holds up.
A worked example: scoring a real profile
For example, take a 31-year-old civil engineer with a bachelor degree assessed positively by Engineers Australia, four years of overseas experience, two years working in Australia, IELTS 7 across all bands, and a partner with competent English but no skills assessment.
| Factor | Points |
|---|---|
| Age 31 (25โ32 bracket) | 30 |
| Proficient English (IELTS 7) | 10 |
| Overseas work, 4 years | 5 |
| Australian work, 2 years | 5 |
| Bachelor degree | 15 |
| Partner with competent English only | 5 |
| Total (189) | 70 |
Seventy clears the pass mark comfortably. However, for a civil engineer in a saturated professional category, 70 is very unlikely to attract a 189 invitation. By contrast, state nomination takes her to 75 for a 190, and regional nomination takes her to 85 for a 491.
Now change two things. Lifting her English to superior is 20 rather than 10, taking her to 80 on a 189 and 95 on a 491. If her partner also obtains a skills assessment, that is another 5. As a result, a profile that looked stuck becomes genuinely competitive โ and neither change required waiting years. This is the kind of modelling Millennium Migration runs before anyone submits an expression of interest.
What skilled visa points test score do you actually need?
There is no published skilled visa points test invitation mark, because the cut-off is wherever the ranking happened to stop in each round for each occupation. What we can do instead is look at what recent rounds actually did.
What the 2025-26 rounds actually invited
The 2025-26 program year ran three subclass 189 rounds: 6,887 invitations on 21 August 2025, 10,000 on 13 November 2025, and a further 10,000 on 4 June 2026. In that final round, cut-offs ranged from 65 points to 100 depending on occupation. Notably, the spread was widest between trades and saturated professional categories.
Minimum points invited, subclass 189 round of 4 June 2026
Construction trades โ carpenter, electrician, bricklayer, plasterer, tiler
Social worker
Telecommunications and electronics engineers, microbiologists, marine biologists
Urologist
Figures reflect the minimum score at which invitations were issued in that round. The Department does not publish a fixed cut-off for every occupation, so treat these as indicative rather than official thresholds. Tie-break date for the round was April 2026.
So “what score do I need” is the wrong question. The right one is “what score do I need in my occupation“, and the spread in that round was 35 points. Meanwhile the 2026-27 program lifted the Skilled Independent allocation from 16,900 to 21,090 places, but cut 18,890 places out of the regional category. Therefore the 491 route got harder in exactly the year the 189 got a little easier.
One practical note on timing. The Department has moved to a quarterly rather than monthly rhythm, and the next 189 round is widely expected around 30 September 2026, though no date has been officially confirmed. Missing a round can therefore mean waiting three months rather than four weeks.
How to raise your skilled visa points test score
In rough order of return on effort, here is how most people lift a skilled visa points test score. Importantly, the first item outperforms the rest by a wide margin:
- Retake your English test. Competent to superior is worth 20 points and achievable in months, not years. The highest-value lever for most applicants.
- Get your partner assessed. Worth 5 or 10 points depending on your position, and often overlooked entirely.
- Sit the NAATI community language credential. Five points, with a modest preparation burden if you already speak a second language fluently.
- Complete a Professional Year if you are an accountant, engineer or IT professional in Australia. Five points plus local experience.
- Target a 491 rather than a 189 for the extra 15 points โ weighed against the reduced regional allocation and the three-year commitment before converting to a 191.
- Consider state nomination for a 190: 5 points, and a separate, sometimes less crowded queue.
Notice what is absent: waiting. Another year of experience often gains nothing, because the brackets are wide and the age clock runs against you simultaneously. In practice, Millennium Migration would rather see six months on an English retake than two years waiting to cross an experience threshold.
Skilled visa points test mistakes that cost people points
Claiming experience before the deemed skilled date. Your assessing authority decides when your employment became skilled. Therefore anything earlier does not count, however genuine the work.
Double-counting work experience. In the skilled visa points test, overseas and Australian experience are capped at 20 combined. Adding 15 and 20 to reach 35 is the most common self-assessment error Millennium Migration corrects.
Reading the wrong English threshold table, or letting something expire. PTE results from 7 August 2025 use component-by-component requirements, so a score that met proficient under the old uniform table may not under the new one. Separately, English tests expire, skills assessments expire and birthdays arrive โ any of which can dissolve a claim that was accurate when made.
Claiming points you cannot document. An overstated claim is not harmless optimism. It can lead to refusal and, in serious cases, engage Public Interest Criterion 4020 with an exclusion period attached. A lower honest score beats a higher unprovable one every time. If you are unsure whether a claim will stand up, Millennium Migration would rather look at it before you submit than after a refusal.
Getting your score checked properly
Finally, score yourself against the table above, then run your figures through the official Department of Home Affairs points calculator. In practice, we point people to the official tool rather than a homemade one, because the Department’s version is authoritative and always current.
For budgeting, the visa application charge from 1 July 2026 is AUD $6,135 for a subclass 189 and AUD $6,140 for a subclass 190 or 491, for the primary applicant. In addition, further applicants, your skills assessment, English test, health checks and police certificates all sit on top. These charges are correct as at 3 August 2026 โ check the Department of Home Affairs for the current amount before you lodge.
However, no calculator can tell you whether your claims will survive assessment, which authority will accept your qualification, whether your employment counts as skilled, or whether your skilled visa points test score is competitive in your occupation this year. Millennium Migration reviews all of that against your actual documents. Sam Lotfollahi, MARN 0901704, has spent seventeen years on skilled files from offices in Melbourne and Adelaide, and will give you a straight read โ including when the honest answer is that your score will not get you invited.
Frequently asked questions
Skilled visa points test basics
What is the pass mark for the skilled visa points test?
The minimum is 65 points for subclass 189, 190 and 491. That makes your expression of interest valid, but it does not make it competitive โ invitations go to the highest-ranked candidates in each round.
Is 65 points enough to get invited?
Rarely, and it depends entirely on your occupation. In the round of 4 June 2026, construction trades were invited at 65 points while telecommunications and electronics engineers required 95 and urologists required 100.
What is the maximum score on the skilled visa points test?
130 points for a subclass 189, before nomination points. A 190 nomination adds 5 and a 491 regional nomination or family sponsorship adds 15 on top.
Do 189, 190 and 491 use different points tests?
No, they use the same table. The difference is the nomination points added on top: 5 points for a 190 state nomination and 15 points for a 491 regional nomination or eligible family sponsorship.
Scoring and combining points
Can I add overseas and Australian work experience together?
They are scored separately but capped at 20 points combined. Eight years overseas plus five years in Australia gives you 20, not 30.
What is the fastest way to add points?
For most applicants, a better English result โ up to 20 points and achievable in months. After that: a partner skills assessment, the NAATI community language credential, a Professional Year, or targeting a 491 for the extra 15 points.
Did the English test requirements change?
Yes, from 7 August 2025. The specified scores were reset and CELPIP General, LANGUAGECERT Academic and the Michigan English Test were added to the accepted list. PTE Academic now sets a separate minimum for each component, while IELTS remains 6, 7 and 8 in each band for competent, proficient and superior.
Timing, changes and what happens next
What happens if I get married after receiving an invitation?
It can affect the validity of your points claim. Partner points are assessed by reference to your circumstances at the time of invitation, so an applicant invited as single generally cannot substitute partner skill points before lodging. Get advice before your circumstances change.
Is the points test changing?
A redesign has been under government consultation since the 2023 Migration Strategy, with proposals including a higher pass mark and income-based points. As at August 2026 the current table still applies. Build your plan on current rules and confirm before lodging.
When is the next invitation round?
The Department has moved to a quarterly rhythm and the next subclass 189 round is widely expected around 30 September 2026, though no date has been officially confirmed. The last round of the 2025-26 year was held on 4 June 2026.
Know your score. Then find out if it’s enough.
A skilled visa points test score means little on its own. What matters is how it ranks in your occupation.
