Enter Australia & marry

Apply for Partner Visa 820/801
After marriage, lodge onshore at a reduced charge of AUD $1,955. A bridging visa keeps you lawful while it is processed, leading to permanent residency (Subclass 801).
Important: the marriage must take place within the visa validity period. If you do not marry in time, the visa ceases and you would need to leave Australia or find another visa pathway. Planning the wedding date early is essential.

These are government fees and may change annually on 1 July. A 1.4% surcharge applies to card payments, and additional costs apply for health checks, police clearances and translations. Because you pay the full partner-pathway charge on the Subclass 300, your later 820/801 application costs only AUD $1,955. How long is the Subclass 300 visa valid?
The visa is valid for 9 months from the date of grant. Within that period you must enter Australia at least once and marry your prospective spouse. The validity period cannot be extended.
Do I have to be outside Australia to apply?
Yes. You must be outside Australia both when you lodge the application and when the visa is granted. This is an offshore visa by design.
Can we marry outside Australia?
Yes. The marriage can legally take place in or outside Australia, as long as it occurs within the visa validity period and you have entered Australia at least once before the visa ceases.
Can I work and study on the Subclass 300?
Yes, the visa gives you full work and study rights (no government funding for study). Medicare access generally begins once you lodge your onshore Partner Visa (820/801) application after the marriage.
What happens after we get married?
You apply for the Partner Visa (Subclass 820/801) onshore before your 300 visa expires, at a reduced application charge of AUD $1,955. You receive a bridging visa that keeps you lawfully in Australia while the partner visa is processed.
Do we need to have met in person?
Yes. You and your prospective spouse must have met in person as adults and know each other personally. Online-only relationships do not meet this requirement.
What if we don't marry within the 9 months?
The visa cannot be extended. If the marriage does not take place within the validity period, the visa ceases and you would need to depart Australia or hold another visa. Planning the wedding date early is essential.
Can I travel in and out of Australia on this visa?
Yes, the Subclass 300 is a multiple-entry visa, so you can travel in and out of Australia as often as you like while it remains valid.
