Partner visa processing times 2026 are frustrating many couples.
The Home Affairs category median was 23 months for Partner provisional/temporary visas in August 2026.
However, that does not mean every application will take 23 months.
Some are decided much sooner, while others take longer.
The important question is not simply, “How long will my visa take?” It is why does one Partner visa move quickly while another sits for months?
The answer involves processing priorities, application quality, security and health checks. Case complexity and application volume also matter.

- Partner visa processing times 2026: the August category median was 23 months for provisional/temporary visas.
- Home Affairs says published times describe recently decided applications and are only a guide.
- Since 25 July 2026, Ministerial Direction 117 gives higher processing priority to certain onshore Family visa applications.
- Incomplete evidence, expired checks and requests for further information can slow a case.
- Permanent 801 and 100 processing has its own timing because eligibility generally begins two years after the original Partner visa application.
Partner visa processing times 2026: what do the numbers mean?
Home Affairs publishes processing times based on recently finalised applications.
They are not a promise that your application will be decided within that period.
The category table gives a 23-month median for Partner provisional/temporary visas in August 2026. It is not an 820-only figure.
A median is the middle value, not a deadline. Roughly half of the relevant recently finalised cases took that long or less.
A 15-month wait, compared with another person’s nine-month decision, does not necessarily mean your case has a problem.
Why Partner visa processing times 2026 are not first-in, first-out
A major change occurred on 25 July 2026, when Ministerial Direction 117 replaced Direction 102.
Direction 117 gives highest priority where the primary applicant was in Australia at lodgement.
The visa must also be grantable while the applicant is in Australia.
Home Affairs identifies onshore Partner applications, including subclasses 820 and 801, as highest priority.
Lower priority is given to offshore Partner subclasses 309 and 100 and Prospective Marriage subclass 300 applications.
Home Affairs also warns that applications in lower-priority groups are likely to experience longer processing times.
Within priority groups, applications are generally assessed in date order.
Special compassionate circumstances may justify priority where compelling reasons support a departure from normal order.
Qualifying onshore applications under Direction 117.
Offshore Partner and Prospective Marriage applications.
Date order generally applies within each priority group. Case circumstances still affect the wait.
Partner visa processing times 2026 depend on your application too
Government priorities are only one part of the story. The quality and complexity of your application also matter.
A Partner visa requires Home Affairs to assess whether your relationship is genuine and continuing.
That usually involves finances, household, social recognition, mutual commitment and the relationship’s history.
Missing documents and requests for more information can extend processing.
Identity verification, police or health checks may also need attention.
Complex immigration or sponsorship issues can take longer to assess.
Home Affairs says incorrect or incomplete applications can take longer.
Requests for information and time needed to verify details also affect the wait.
Millennium Migration recommends a strong, decision-ready application. Do not assume missing evidence can simply be supplied later.
Partner visa processing times 2026: the 801 and 100 stage
Another source of confusion around Partner visa processing times 2026 is the permanent stage.
For 801 and 100 visas, permanent-stage processing time starts at eligibility.
For most applicants, this is two years after the original combined temporary and permanent application, provided they hold the temporary Partner visa.
Earlier consideration may be available under exceptions, including a qualifying long-term relationship at lodgement.
If you lodged an 820/801 application two years ago, the journey began at lodgement.
An 801 processing figure describes the permanent stage, not the whole journey.
At that eligibility point, update relationship evidence, addresses, travel history and other relevant information.
Millennium Migration can review your application, identify missing evidence and explain where your case sits in the Partner visa process.
Message Millennium Migration on WhatsAppPartner visa processing times 2026: avoiding delays
You cannot force Home Affairs to decide an application simply because you have been waiting a long time.
You also cannot purchase faster Partner visa processing.
However, you can avoid creating unnecessary delays.
Supply requested documents by the deadline. Keep contact and passport details current, monitor ImmiAccount and respond promptly to requests.
Health assessment results normally remain valid for 12 months; a health undertaking is valid for six months.
Home Affairs may request repeat examinations if results expire before decision.
Check other time-sensitive evidence too.
If your circumstances genuinely involve compelling compassionate circumstances, priority processing may be possible.
It is not granted merely because the wait is inconvenient.
A priority request needs all required application documents and evidence of the exceptional circumstances. Most requests cannot be approved.
Separation, pregnancy, wedding plans and expiring checks alone are not accepted priority reasons in the official factsheet.
Higher processing priority does not guarantee an earlier decision than every lower-priority case, or a visa grant.
- Relationship evidence: financial, household, social and commitment
- Police and health checks: follow the Department’s instructions
- ImmiAccount: read requests and meet response deadlines
- Changes: update contact, passport and relevant circumstances
