A study to PR pathway can work, but studying in Australia does not automatically lead to permanent residency.
The course you choose, your age, occupation, skills assessment, English and work experience can all matter later.
For eligible graduates, one possible study to PR pathway is Student visa (subclass 500) → Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) → skilled or employer-sponsored visa → permanent residence (PR).
For others, a suitable study to PR pathway may involve regional migration, direct employer sponsorship or state nomination.
This Millennium Migration guide explains how to plan the pathway under the rules applying in October 2026.

There is no guaranteed “PR course” in Australia.
Occupation lists, state nomination programs, invitation scores and employer demand can change while you study.
The short version
- Student visa 500 → Temporary Graduate visa 485 → subclass 189.
- Student 500 → 485 → state-nominated subclass 190.
- Student 500 → 485 → regional subclass 491 → permanent subclass 191.
- Student 500 → 485 → employer-sponsored subclass 482 → permanent subclass 186.
- Student 500 → regional employer sponsorship 494 → permanent subclass 191.
- Some graduates may qualify directly for skilled or employer-sponsored visas without using a 485.
Step 1: plan your study to PR pathway before choosing a course
Your Student visa allows you to study, but a study to PR pathway must meet separate permanent visa criteria.
A qualification should therefore be considered alongside the occupation it may lead to and the assessing authority.
For example, nursing, engineering, teaching, trades and ICT all have different skills assessment requirements.
A university admitting you to a course does not mean the relevant assessing authority will later assess you positively.
Your study to PR pathway must start with genuine study. The Department of Home Affairs Genuine Student (GS) requirement makes study the primary reason for a Student visa. A genuine student’s future intention to seek PR does not, by itself, count against them.
Practitioner tip: start with the intended occupation, then work backwards to the qualification.
Choosing a course first and investigating migration options after graduation can create expensive surprises.
Discuss your study to PR pathway through our Student visa services. Check the official rules linked here for current eligibility before committing to a course.
Step 2: the 485 in your study to PR pathway
A subclass 485 can provide time to work and build relevant experience for your study to PR pathway. It is temporary and does not guarantee a job, nomination or PR.
| 485 stream | Typical qualification | Usual stay |
|---|---|---|
| Post-Higher Education Work | Bachelor, Masters or Doctoral degree | Usually 2–3 years |
| Post-Vocational Education Work | Associate degree, diploma or trade qualification | 18 months |
| Second Post-Higher Education Work | Eligible regional graduate | 1–2 additional years |
The usual periods in this study to PR pathway table have exceptions. Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders may receive five years. Nationality-specific arrangements, including those for Indian nationals, can affect Post-Higher Education Work stay periods. Check the stream page for your circumstances.
Most primary 485 applicants must be aged 35 or under when they apply.
For the Post-Higher Education Work stream, applicants using a Masters by research or Doctoral Degree (PhD) to meet the study requirement can apply while under 50.
Hong Kong and British National Overseas passport holders also have an under-50 exception.
You generally need to have held a Student visa within the previous six months and meet the study requirement.
The second regional 485 is not automatic. It requires an eligible earlier graduate visa, a qualifying regional degree and at least two years of eligible regional residence immediately before applying, as well as other criteria.
The Australian study requirement
The study normally needs at least 92 weeks registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS). It must be completed over at least 16 calendar months.
The study must be in English, meet the Australian location requirements and be completed while holding a visa that allows study.
A 485 application must generally be lodged within six months of completing the qualifying course.
For your study to PR pathway, use the completion date confirmed by your provider, not the graduation ceremony date. Course credits can reduce eligible study; check the 92-week and 16-month tests separately.
Study to PR pathway: degree versus vocational graduates
The Post-Higher Education Work stream is based on an eligible degree and is not limited to one occupation list.
A related Graduate Diploma can also qualify when completed in the same or next academic year after an eligible completed degree. Check the full qualification rules rather than treating every diploma as interchangeable.
That does not mean the degree automatically creates a skilled migration pathway afterwards.
By contrast, the Post-Vocational Education Work stream requires a qualification closely related to an occupation on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).
A relevant skills assessment is also required for that vocational stream.
At lodgement, provide the valid assessment or evidence that you have applied for it. A study to PR pathway may later require a different assessment for the next visa; do not assume a graduate assessment is enough.
This distinction matters: 485 eligibility and permanent skilled visa eligibility are different tests.
Step 3: build a skilled study to PR pathway
The Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189), Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) and Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) use SkillSelect and the points test.
You generally need to be under 45 when invited and have at least 65 points to be eligible.
However, 65 points does not guarantee an invitation.
A study to PR pathway also needs the relevant occupation, a suitable skills assessment and the required English. State nomination has its own rules. Subclass 491 can involve state nomination or eligible family sponsorship.
| Visa | What it offers | Extra points |
|---|---|---|
| 189 Skilled Independent | Permanent residence without state nomination | None |
| 190 Skilled Nominated | Permanent residence with state nomination | 5 points |
| 491 Skilled Work Regional | Five-year regional provisional visa | 15 points |
Australian study can provide 5 points, with another 5 points potentially available for eligible regional study.
English, age, skilled employment, partner skills and other factors can also substantially change your score.
Build your study to PR pathway around claims you can prove. Our guide to increasing skilled visa points explains the main scoring factors.
Regional study to PR pathway: check the conditions
Do not choose regional study for your study to PR pathway only because someone promises “easy PR”.
But it can provide additional points and may open state nomination or regional employer opportunities.
A subclass 491 holder can apply for the Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa (subclass 191) after meeting its requirements.
You must hold an eligible regional visa for at least three years and comply with its conditions.
Subclass 191 currently has no minimum income threshold. Applicants must provide Australian Taxation Office (ATO) notices of assessment for three income years out of the five years of their eligible visa.
Step 4: an employer-sponsored study to PR pathway
Permanent residence does not have to come through the points-tested system.
A graduate who finds the right employer may move into the Skills in Demand subclass 482.
The Core Skills stream requires an occupation on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) and at least one year of relevant work experience in the nominated occupation or a related field.
The Core Skills Income Threshold is AUD $79,423 for nominations lodged from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027. Annual market salary requirements also apply.
Correct as at 12 October 2026; check the Department of Home Affairs salary requirements for the current amount. For a study to PR pathway, a job offer alone is not enough: the nomination and visa requirements must also be met.
482 to 186 permanent residence
The Employer Nomination Scheme visa (subclass 186), Temporary Residence Transition stream, can provide PR after qualifying sponsored employment.
Current rules generally require two years of eligible full-time sponsored employment in Australia during the three years before the visa application. The work must meet the specified visa and occupation conditions.
The 186 Direct Entry stream is another option and normally requires three years of relevant experience.
Direct Entry applicants generally need a positive skills assessment and must be under 45 unless exempt.
Your study to PR pathway still needs employer nomination and the applicable English, health and character requirements. Completing a period of employment does not itself grant permanent residence.
What about regional employer sponsorship?
The Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 494) allows eligible regional employers to sponsor workers for five years.
Applicants generally need an eligible occupation, a skills assessment, English and three years of relevant experience. They must usually be under 45; relevant exemptions may apply.
Eligible 494 holders can later apply for subclass 191 after holding the regional visa for at least three years.
New Student visa rules from 2 October 2026
Your study to PR pathway also needs to account for the new Student visa application rules.
From 2 October 2026, most applicants must lodge Student visa applications from outside Australia.
Most current Student visa holders also cannot simply lodge another Student visa onshore unless an exemption applies.
Onshore applicants must hold an eligible visa and meet an exemption category. Applications lodged before 2 October 2026 are assessed under the rules that applied when lodged. Check family-member eligibility separately under the new rules.
This makes repeatedly extending study to remain in Australia a less reliable strategy than before.
Common study to PR pathway mistakes
- Choosing a course because it is marketed as a “PR course”.
- Ignoring the skills assessment requirements until after graduation.
- Assuming a 485 visa automatically leads to permanent residence.
- Waiting too long and losing points because of age.
- Focusing only on subclass 189 and ignoring 190, 491 or employer sponsorship.
- Choosing regional study without understanding the regional visa conditions.
- Assuming occupation lists and state nomination settings will remain unchanged for several years.
Frequently asked questions about the study to PR pathway
Planning and eligibility
Does studying in Australia guarantee permanent residency?
No. Study can help build eligibility, but permanent residence depends on the visa criteria in force later.
Do I need a 485 visa before applying for PR?
No. A 485 can be useful, but some graduates may qualify directly for skilled or employer-sponsored pathways.
Graduate visas and regional options
What is the age limit for the 485 visa?
Most applicants must be 35 or under. Research Masters, PhD and certain passport holders have exceptions.
How long is the 485 visa valid?
Post-Higher Education visas are generally two to three years, while the Post-Vocational stream is usually up to 18 months. Passport-specific exceptions can apply, so check the official stream page.
Does regional study guarantee a 491 nomination?
No. Regional study may help, but each state or territory applies its own nomination requirements.
Permanent residence pathways
Can a Student visa lead to employer-sponsored PR?
Yes. Some graduates move from study to a 482 visa and later qualify for subclass 186 permanent residence.
Can I get PR through a subclass 491 or 494 visa?
Yes. Eligible 491 and 494 holders can apply for subclass 191 after meeting the required three-year conditions.
When should I start planning my study-to-PR pathway?
